Among the many A-level subjects on offer in England, exactly one has more than 100,000 entries. Maths recorded 109,875 for summer 2026, up 3.9% on the year. Psychology, the second largest, sits at 76,765. Nothing else comes close.
This is a relatively recent arrangement. Maths has grown steadily for two decades while the subjects that once shared the top of the table have not, and the effect is that a subject many students find genuinely difficult has become the closest thing sixth forms have to a default choice.
What the 2026 entry data shows
The wider pattern is a drift towards quantitative and applied subjects. Further maths entries rose 8.6% to 20,340. Economics rose 10.7% to 46,365 and is now the fifth largest A-level subject in England, having sat eighth a year earlier. Political studies rose 13.1% and law rose 11.6%.
Moving the other way: English literature entries fell 5.8% to 32,890, drama fell 9.5% and classical subjects fell 9.6%. At GCSE the same drift is visible, with French down 5.5% and, unexpectedly after years of growth, computing down 7.0%.
Some of the growth is simply demographic. The eighteen year old population in England rose 4.3% this year, which is faster than the 2.9% increase in total A-level entries. A subject growing by less than 4.3% is arguably not growing at all in relative terms. Maths at 3.9% sits just below that line, which tempers the story slightly, and it is the sort of context that gets missed when entry figures are reported.
Why students pick it
Three reasons come up repeatedly, and only one of them is enthusiasm for the subject.
The first is that it keeps options open. Engineering, physics, economics, computer science, actuarial work and most quantitative finance either require it or effectively assume it. Choosing it at sixteen preserves paths a student has not thought about yet, and closing those paths is harder to undo than carrying a subject for two years.
The second is that it is legible to admissions tutors and employers. A maths A-level communicates something specific in a way that broader qualifications do not always manage, and students and parents know this.
The third is money, which nobody says out loud in a school assembly. Graduate earnings data consistently shows quantitative degrees clustering at the higher end, and maths is the entry ticket to most of them. It would be dishonest to pretend that sixteen year olds and their families are unaware of this.
What the qualification actually contains
A-level maths has been a single linear qualification since the 2017 reform, which means everything is assessed at the end of the two years and there is no coursework and no tiering. On the Edexcel specification, students sit three papers of two hours each: two on pure mathematics, and one covering statistics and mechanics together.
Roughly two thirds of the content is pure: algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus, sequences, vectors and proof. The applied third splits between statistics, which now involves working with a large real data set, and mechanics, which is essentially the physics of forces and motion expressed mathematically.
Students expecting a continuation of GCSE are usually surprised by two things. Proof appears early and is examined properly, which is a different activity from getting the right answer. And the statistics component asks candidates to interpret data rather than only calculate from it, which rewards a skill the rest of the subject does not obviously develop.
Further maths is a separate A-level taken alongside, not an extension of the main one. It is worth mentioning because some university courses in maths, physics and engineering either require it or strongly prefer it, and that is not always obvious from a prospectus at the point a student is choosing subjects at sixteen.
The part that goes wrong
A-level maths has a reputation for a difficult first term, and the reputation is earned. The jump from GCSE is steeper than in most subjects, largely because A-level assumes fluency with GCSE material rather than familiarity with it. Students who reached grade 6 by working carefully through methods often find the pace unforgiving, while those who found GCSE straightforward sometimes arrive without study habits and hit the same wall from the other direction.
The usual failure point is algebra rather than anything introduced at A-level. Manipulation that was optional at GCSE becomes assumed, and a student who is slightly slow at rearranging expressions spends their attention on that rather than on the new concept the lesson is about.
This is fixable and it is worth naming, because students frequently interpret it as evidence they are not a maths person rather than as a specific gap that took four years to form and takes a few weeks to close.
How long it takes
An A-level is built around roughly 360 guided learning hours, against 120 to 200 for a GCSE. In a sixth form that is spread across two years. Independently it can be compressed into one, and plenty of people do, but the compression has to be planned rather than discovered in March.
A realistic independent timetable is around eight to ten hours a week for two years, or closer to eighteen for one. The pure content has to be sequenced properly, since almost everything in the second year assumes the first, and skipping ahead to the interesting material is the most common way independent students lose a term.
Taking it outside school
Not everybody sits A-levels in a sixth form. Adults returning to study for a career change into engineering, teaching or data work, students whose school did not offer the subject, and home educated students all end up looking for another route. An A-level maths course studied independently covers the same specification and produces the same qualification, since the certificate records the grade and the awarding body and nothing about where you studied.
Two practical points apply to anyone going that way. Maths A-level assumes a secure grade 6 or above at GCSE, and going in below that is the single most common reason independent students stall. And the exam is sat as a private candidate, which means finding a centre that offers your specification and booking it around six months ahead. Maths is easier to place than subjects with coursework, but centres still cap external entries.
Whether it is the right choice
For a student aiming at a quantitative degree, the question does not really arise. For everyone else it is worth being honest about the trade-off. Maths taken reluctantly alongside two subjects a student cares about tends to produce three mediocre grades rather than one useful one, and universities look at the profile rather than the intention.
The subject is the largest A-level in England because it opens more doors than anything else on the list. That is a good reason to take it and a poor reason to take it if the doors it opens lead somewhere you have no intention of going.
