London Fire Brigade (LFB) is warning residents to stay safe as temperatures are expected to rise above 30 degrees in the next days.
The latest string of hot weather to hit the capital this summer has increased the risk of wildfires across parks and open spaces, with LFB attending 63 grass fires across London at the end of last month.
It comes amid a series of heatwaves and high-profile wildfires across Europe in recent weeks.
London Fire Brigade’s Assistant Commissioner Pam Oparaocha said: “If you’re out in our parks and open spaces, you can help reduce the risk of wildfires.
“Keep your disposable BBQ at home, put your rubbish in bins and safely dispose of smoking materials“.
With the hot weather comes a higher risk of fires in gardens. People using a BBQ at home are advised by the LFB to make sure to keep it away from dry grasses, fences or sheds. The Fire Brigade also recommends not seting up BBQs on balconies.
The Fire Brigade are warning about the dangers of swimming in lakes and rivers, advising people to stay in designated bathing areas.
At least 42 people are reported to have died this summer after getting into difficulty in open water.
Oparaocha added: “London’s waterways may look like a great way to cool off, but they can pose serious danger. Only swim in designated bathing areas, where it is safe to do so. Open water can have strong currents, hidden debris, slippery edges, and sudden drops in depth - all of which can be fatal.
