The world’s oldest continuous boat race has taken another step towards its 2026 edition, as competitors gathered at Fishmongers’ Hall for the official draw ahead of September’s Doggett’s Coat and Badge Race.
Established in 1715, the Doggett’s Coat and Badge Race has been contested by apprentice watermen and lightermen on the River Thames for more than 300 years.
The historic event, which runs from London Bridge to Cadogan Pier, remains one of the capital’s most enduring sporting traditions, combining fierce competition with centuries of river heritage.
The annual draw determines each competitor’s starting position for race day and marks the beginning of the final preparations before they take to the Thames in September. Held in the historic surroundings of Fishmongers’ Hall, the ceremony also celebrates the race’s rich history, with the venue displaying plaques commemorating generations of past winners.
Among those overseeing proceedings was race umpire Bobby Prentice, a former Doggett’s winner and the current course record holder. Prentice set the fastest time of 23 minutes and 22 seconds in 1973 and continues to play a key role in preserving one of Britain’s oldest sporting traditions.
One of this year’s competitors is 20-year-old Callum Howard, who will celebrate his 21st birthday before the race takes place. Making his Doggett’s debut, Howard is continuing a family connection to the River Thames that stretches back generations, as he prepares to take on one of the most demanding and prestigious races in British rowing.
