Best parkruns in South West London

Parkruns are an increasingly popular method of exercise, where people across the UK can go to a weekly community event in a local park to run a 5km distance. It is perfect for people who want to keep fit or train for longer-distance races such as a marathon.

There are dedicated parks for parkruns, usually held every Saturday morning, and they take place all over the world.

In South West London specifically, several beautiful, large, scenic parks are perfect for parkruns due to their convenient location and size.

If you’re here to find out why parkruns are so popular and what the best runs are in the South West London area, we’ll cover all of that below.

Why people go on parkruns

Parkruns are not a race. People go with the express aim of trying to complete a 5k (around 3.1 miles) run in the best time that they can. A tail walker is there to ensure no one finishes last.

If someone has done a park run before, they may go in to try to beat their own personal record. This is because everyone’s times get recorded in a parkrun, so you can log and compare your previous results.

This is great training for people working towards a marathon (a total of 42.2k), and it is also a great way to stay fit in general. People want to exercise for many different reasons. For example, they may want to do it for their health, or to keep in shape for their work.

Another key reason why people exercise is to support weight management and improve overall metabolic health. Running is an effective way to burn calories and maintain a healthy energy balance.

In many cases, exercise is combined with a structured nutrition plan such as a low-calorie or low-carb diet, and in some situations also with medically supervised weight loss treatments. These can include prescription weight loss medications that help regulate appetite and support long-term weight reduction when lifestyle changes alone are not enough.

In recent years, the demand for medically supervised weight loss treatments, including medications such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, has increased significantly as more people seek effective long-term solutions for obesity management.

What are the top parkruns in the SW?

Some of the best parkruns in South West London include Richmond Park, which boasts scenic views and even the occasional roaming deer. Situated near Bishops Gate, Richmond’s Parkrun follows a fairly hilly course, starting on an uphill climb which will test your stamina. This makes it great for training.

In the far south end of London, there is Lloyd Park in Croydon, which features a large hill and woodland trails. It doesn’t have a set path; instead, you run on grass and dirt through bumpy grounds and steep hills. After you complete the challenging run, you can reward yourself with a cosy cafe situated right by the finish line.

There is also Battersea Park, a fairly flat course compared to the other two parkruns, which makes it an excellent park for beginners and for those trying to beat their personal best.

It has beautiful views of the River Thames as you run. It also has wide, spacious paths and a nearby local cafe, making it a great place to make friends.
