LISTEN: The Irish music traditions thriving in London

Many people associate Irish traditional music with Ireland, but one of its best-known traditions has deep roots in London.

The modern Irish pub session emerged in the capital following the post-war wave of Irish migration, as musicians living in bedsits and shared accommodation turned to pubs as places to meet and play together.

Decades later, that tradition is still thriving, with more than 40 regular Irish music sessions taking place across London every week.

The scene has also evolved beyond the Irish community, attracting musicians and audiences from a wide range of backgrounds, while continuing to provide a cultural connection for Irish people living abroad.

In this radio package, Brenna Spain speaks to musician and teacher Karen Ryan about London’s role in shaping the Irish traditional music scene, hears from her student Milo about finding community through trad music, and explores why the capital remains an important hub for one of Ireland’s most enduring cultural traditions.
