Lambeth Council is throwing a free Portugal Day party around Wilcox Road in Stockwell on Saturday, June 13, as a bid to demonstrate their increased work in publicising Little Portugal as a top cultural spot for visitors of the borough.
Portugal Day, which is normally celebrated on June 10, is a national holiday for Portuguese people, of which there has historically been a large population in the SW8 area.
But as rent prices hike and student accommodation blocks rise in this southwest London neighbourhood, population demographics seem to be changing.
In Lambeth’s growth plan, the council lays out their intention to draw more people into Little Portugal thanks to “wayfinding” and “gateway” creation, which one local restaurateur said would mean building street signs near tube stations to direct visitors to the Portuguese neighborhood.
South Lambeth Road is certainly still a hotspot for Portuguese delis and restaurants: we spoke with some of the people behind them to see what changes they forecasted for the area.
