Little Portugal: Cost of living, urbanisation, and a community that has to adapt

Little Portugal is a unique corner in Lambeth, London where family run businesses and community spaces thrive.

Home to the highest proportion of Portuguese speakers in the UK, the area has seen a noticeable level of change in recent years due to new developments such as the American Embassy, Nine Elms Underground Station, and student accommodation being built in and around the location.

These developments have driven up prices – including rent – which have directly impacted local communities.

The SW Londoner interviewed local councillor Diogo Costa and business owner Jose Albuquerque about how the community is changing and responding to this challenge.
