There are an estimate of around 2500 working police dogs across the UK at the moment.
The dogs spent their lives serving this country and keeping the general public safe, but when it comes to retirement their support is limited.
This means their handlers are left with high medical and administration costs that they often cannot afford.
Phil Wells, Co-founder of London Retired Police Dogs Trust, said: “London Retired Police Dogs Trust was born out of a gap where police dogs would retire from service and there was no support in place for them in their aging years.”
Last week marked the sixth birthday of the charity, vital to supporting London’s retired police dogs.
They have so fair raised £300,000 towards grants and supporting medical bills.
