Twickenham pubs see high turn-out for Women’s Rugby World Cup final

Twickenham’s pubs welcomed a high volume of customers celebrating England’s win at home in the Women’s Rugby World Cup.

The Red Roses came out victorious against Canada, with a 33-13 score when the whistle blew on 27 September.

Pubs in the area were ready for a high turnout, and their expectations were exceeded.

Archie Laird, manager of the Shack 68 pub, said: “There were as many people as for a men’s game, which is not usually the case.”

The Shack 68 hosted a party for the final, attended by Red Roses Jessica Breach, Zoe Harrison, and Sarah Bern after the trophy ceremony.

Star US player, Ilona Maher was also present at the event, which the manager thought would ‘help put the pub on the map’.

He said the pub was ‘mobbed’ in the wake of the final.

Celebrations were also held at the Cabbage Patch, the ‘most famous rugby pub in the world’ and official pub for the Twickenham rugby team Harlequins.

Josh, assistant manager at the Cabbage Patch, said it was ‘absolute carnage all day’.

He said: “There were 3,000 people just in the garden, just between eight and 10 o’clock.”

Josh said the celebrations included a festival in the garden, seven bars open, and ‘drinks everywhere you can see’.

The assistant manager had expected higher attendance earlier in the day, however lots of people had gone to watch New Zealand beat France for bronze.

The event was significant beyond the boost to the neighbouring economy.

There was a record attendance for a women’s rugby match at Twickenham stadium, with an impressive 81,885 spectators in the stands.

England last hosted the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2010 at the smaller Twickenham Stoop, with only 13,253 in attendance.

The final also gathered a peak television audience of 5.8 million viewers in the UK, making it the most-watched rugby match of the year, for both the men’s and women’s teams.
