LISTEN: Canada Day celebrations in London

Canada Day celebration took place in Trafalgar Square on 28 June in a festival atmosphere with live music and traditional food and drink.

More than 80,000 Canadians live in the UK and many came together to commemorate their national holiday.

Canada Day is celebrated traditionally on 1 July and stems from 1867 when the British North American Act was signed into law.

Serena Sun, a Canadian musician who has lived in the UK for two years, said: “I really miss the mountains and the ocean.

“A lot of the songs I’ve been writing recently have been about missing home but London is so vibrant.

“This is crazy celebrating Canada Day here.”

She pointed to celebrating the indigenous people and coming together with other Canadians that made the day so special.

Sun performed to her fellow Canadians and it was her first time being on a main stage in an experience which she said she adored.

Ex-pats Mark and Erin Delaney were eager to sample a taste of home after moving to England four months ago.

Trafalgar Square played host, with stalls selling traditional Canadian food and drink such as poutine and caesars, similar to a bloody mary.

Other music acts included Rum Ragged and Arkells.
