ROYAL BOROUGH OF KINGSTON UPON THAMES ELECTION RESULTS

Conservative – 28 seats – 53,582 votes – 39%

Liberal Democrat – 18 seats – 41,383 votes – 30%

Labour – 2 seats – 23,905 votes – 18%

Green Party – 0 seats – 9,350 votes – 7%

UK Independence Party – 0 seats – 7,518 votes – 6%

Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts – 0 seats – 533 votes – <1%

Independent – 0 seats – 188 votes – <1%

British National Party – 0 seats – 100 votes – <1%

Total votes – 136,559

No official figures regarding turnouts have yet been released but the figure is believed to be around 40% across the borough.

 

ALEXANDRA – Conservative swing of one seat from Liberal Democrats

The Liberal Democrats failed to replace the outgoing John Burgess with another party member as Conservative Chris Hayes is newly elected to give his party all three seats. Councillor Richard Hudson retained his seat.

BERRYLANDS – Conservative swing of one seat from Liberal Democrats

Lib Dem Sushila Abraham retained her by-election won seat but Bob Steed failed to defend his as the Tories swung the ward 2-1 in their favour. Newly elected Councillor Andy Johnson held off Lib Dems’ Thomas Chesterman by only 43 votes.

BEVERLEY – Conservative swing of two seats from Liberal Democrats

A disastrous result for the Lib Dems as previous councillors Simon James and Trevor Heap lost their seats and the Tories claimed a clean sweep. Terry Paton kept the seat he won in the by-election called last year following the resignation of Derek Osbourne – the former council leader jailed for child pornography offences.

CANBURY – Conservative swing of one seat from Independent

Councillors Andrea Craig and Geoff Austin retained their seats and were joined by newly elected David Glasspool to give the Tories complete control of the word. Previous incumbent Timothy Dennen, charged with alleged benefit fraud, finished last. There were significant gains for the Green Party with 20-year-old candidate Ryan Coley finishing fourth ahead of all three Lib Dem candidates.

The ward remained split 2-1 to the Lib Dems as both parties held their seats. Margaret Thompson and Andrew Day were re-elected and Clive Chase replaced outgoing Deputy Mayor Alan Dean.

CHESSINGTON SOUTH – Liberal Democrat hold

The only ward with all three serving Lib Dem councillors standing for re-election saw each retain their seat. The successful team of Patricia Bamford, Rachel Reid and Shiraz Mirza provided some cheer on an otherwise disappointing night for the party. Keen Tory interest in the count did not match the results and UKIP tabled their strongest numbers in the borough.

NORBITON – Labour swing of two seats from Liberal Democrats

After a second recount two days later, Labour finally confirmed they had returned to Kingston Council after a four-year absence. They almost claimed all three seats but party chairman Laurie South fell just three votes shy of denying newly elected Liberal Democrat Bill Brisbane. Now former Mayor Penny Shelton and David Ryder-Mills failed to defend their seats.
