LISTEN: Addressing the third culture kid paradox of belonging

HomeTCK London had their first meet up last month, bringing together the city’s third culture kid community.

Third culture kids or TCKs, are people who have spent a period of their childhood in a country different than their parents’ passport country.

The term was originally coined in the 1950s and now includes the children of expats, diplomats, and refugees.

According to researcher and psychotherapist Dr Chloe Donahue, TCKs have a complex sense of belonging due to their unique upbringing.

Many feel like they live in the in-between places, cultures, and feeling like they belong everywhere and nowhere.

Donahue said: “We see that kind of half in half out at times, and what we often see as a way of third culture kids of dealing with that is kind of finding home more in people and relationships.”

The exact number of TCKs is not known, but 2022 estimates say there are 230 million TCKs globally.

Clubs like HomeTCK can be a safe haven fo them.
