Number of padel courts in Great Britain skyrockets to 1000

The number of padel courts in Great Britain has skyrocketed to more than 1000 since 2019, the LTA has revealed.

Figures released by the LTA, Great Britain’s National Governing Body of tennis and padel, show the number of padel courts has risen from 68 in 2019 to over 1000 in 2025.

There was a particularly sharp increase between 2023 and 2024, where the number of courts had more than doubled from 350 to 763.

Tom Murray, LTA Head of Padel, said: “It’s great news that we’ve reached the milestone of 1,000 padel courts in Great Britain and shows how rapidly the sport is growing across the whole country.”

Padel is a racket sport with the same scoring system as tennis but different rules and technique.

It is a new and fast-growing sport, thought to have been invented in Mexico by Enrique Corcuera in 1969.

The UK Padel Federation launched in 2011 and the sport was included in the 2023 European games.

There are now 87 national padel federations, according to the International Padel Federation (FIP), enough for it to qualify as an Olympic sport.

The milestone comes after GB’s men’s and women’s padel teams both qualified for the final eight at the FIP Euro Padel Cup in Madrid earlier this month.

The LTA now wants to make the sport accessible to more people.

According to the LTA, 75% of padel venues already actively engage in community outreach initiatives such as partnering with local schools to offering free sessions and coaching for underserved groups.

Moreover, the LTA is in discussions with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport about plans for 40 community covered tennis and padel hubs.

Murray said: “It’s an exciting time for padel and the perfect time for people of all ages and abilities to pick up a racket and enjoy the sport.”
