National sport of Thailand reaches Twickenham High Street

A new martial arts gym has reached Twickenham High Street, bringing one of the world’s fastest-growing combat sports to the local community.

Muay Thai, known as “The Art of Eight Limbs“, is the national sport of Thailand.

Unlike conventional striking, it incorporates bare shin kicks, elbows and clinching techniques – making it one of the most technical and visually striking of the martial arts.

Owner, Sam Aminian has been training across martial arts since he was seven years old and later trained on the discplines of kickboxing and Muay Thai.

Having worked as a personal trainer and teacher of martial arts for 23 years, he decided to open the gym after recognising a gap in this local area.

“My goal is to help people become stronger, get fit, and reach their personal goals,” Sam said.

Once largely regional, Muay Thai has surged in popularity over the past decade.

The sport has garnered global attention with the help of high-profile combat sports organisations like ONE Championship and UFC.

Across the UK, there has been a rapid increase in Muay Thai gyms and participation, with 750 dedicated Muay Thai gyms; however, in Twickenham or any larger borough has yet to see one until now.

The gym, which will open mid-April, welcomes people of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to experienced practitioners.

Sam says the new gym is designed to welcome people of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to experienced practitioners.

“Whether someone is overweight and wants to get fit, or already fit and wants to become stronger and build confidence, I try to support them in finding their potential,” he said.

The gym will add another independent business to Twickenham High Street – offering locals a new way to stay fit.
