Joe Johnston lauds goal-hungry Fisher as Streatham Redskins crush Oxford City Stars

Streatham Redskins 8 Oxford City Stars 4

Joe Johnston was all praise for Steven Fisher as the forward scored five goals in Streatham Redskins’ convincing win at Oxford City Stars on Sunday.

Oxford led early through player-coach Darren Elliott but goals from Michal Oravec, Fisher, Jack Tarczycki and a fortuitous strike from Joe Allen had Streatham in control.

Elliott scored again before a Fisher double made it 6-2, but Josh Oliver hit two quick-fire goals for the home side before Oravec and Fisher combined twice to complete his quintet.

The result keeps Redskins top of National Ice Hockey League South 1, ahead of Chelmsford Chieftains, who have played two games less, on goal difference.

Welshman Fisher was influential throughout helping the Redskins to a fifth consecutive victory.

Skipper Johnston said: “Steven was phenomenal but he’s doing that every night in training. He’s a clinical finisher in front of goal.

“Michal and Callum Best did some outstanding work for him in the build up and when that trio are on song we’re unstoppable.”

Johnston was somewhat disappointed about the concession of four goals to bottom-of-the-table Oxford and sees room for improvement.

He said: “Our firepower going forward has never really been an issue but our coach Warren Rost will not be happy with some of the goals we conceded.”

The Streatham veteran also thinks there is more to come from his side as the busy ice hockey calendar continues next weekend away to Bracknell and home to Wightlink.

“We still probably aren’t playing to our maximum,” he added.

“We have a few more gears before we reach full throttle which is a good sign.

“Bracknell is going to be very tricky. We edged them 3-2 earlier in the season and it’s always difficult going to them. We’re two very similar teams but we’re gunning for another two points.”
