King Charles I was executed by Parliamentarians outside Whitehall Palace on this day 376 years ago.
His bloody end came after a seven-year tussle for power with Oliver Cromwell.
But within 11 years of Charles’ execution, Cromwell had died, the coup had failed, and the King’s son had been crowned.
And for every year since 1972, the English Civil War Society has been marching down The Mall to remember the King’s execution.
They end their march on Horseguards Parade where Charles was killed – being one of the only private groups allowed to do so – and say a prayer for the King.
