South West London restaurants triumph in Time Out Eating & Drinking Awards

The Time Out Eating & Drinking Awards 2012 were announced this week, with half of the winners being South West London restaurants and bars.

The annual awards, which are judged by Time Out panellists, have not produced any SW London winners since 2009. Though many places in the area have been runners-up since then.

Brixton’s Boqueria Tapas picked up Best New Cheap Eats and The Crown & Anchor, also in Brixton, won Best New Beer Bar.

Clapham’s Abbeville Kitchen won Best New Local Restaurant and Best New Design went to Knightsbridge’s Mari Vanna, which serves traditional Russian food. 

Guy Dimond, Time Out’s Food and Drink Editor and judge, said: “There happened to be a cluster that were all quite good.

“There’s no particular reason why, but one possibility is the more innovative places have been priced out of central London.”

The other four categories were: Best New Restaurant, Best New No-Bookings Restaurant, Best New Meat Restaurant and Best New Latin American Restaurant.

The other winning eateries are based in Aldwych, Shoreditch and Soho.

Jaine Armender, Manager of Boqueria Tapas, said: “We are really proud to have won.”

He added: “South West London is the best place to be. South West London people have become very travelled and there’s a lot of cultural relevance.”

Kevin Hastings, Manager of Abbeville Kitchen, said the reason for there being more interest in SW London eateries could be because more young people moving to the area because it is much cheaper.

He added: “It’s great to have won, a lot of hard work goes in.”
