WATCH: Battersea photography competition celebrates finalists

A Battersea photography competition has celebrated its finalists and winner in an exhibition that asked entrants to explore themes of community and connection across the borough.

Ran by the Battersea Society in partnership with the Royal College of Art the competition is part of Wandsworth’s London Borough of Culture event line up and attracted more than 100 entries.

Entrants were to submit between one to three images taken anywhere in the borough that portrayed their understanding of the theme of community and connection.

Judging the competition were Aisha Seriki, a Nigerian British fine art photographer; Alan Burles, former Art Director of Saatchi & Saatchi; Hermione Wiltshire, Senior Photography Tutor at the Royal College of Art, and Mark Hodgkinson, Trustee at the Battersea Society.

Hermione said she particularly enjoyed the breadth of images people had taken and chosen to submit for the competition.

She said: “Some of the pictures we were most interested in were close up and intimate photographs that might not be identified with Battersea but very much identified with the theme of community and connection.”

The competition showcased entrants from as young as 15 all the way to those in their eighties with very different interpretations of the theme.

Watch the video below to see more from the finalists, the winner and what the images can tell us about community and connection in Battersea.
