Sports clubs and young athletes were honoured for their achievements at the annual Hammersmith and Fulham Sporting Excellence Awards.

The great and the good of local sport gathered in the Mayor’s Parlour in Hammersmith Town Hall to be commended for their contribution to the community over the past year.

The seven clubs recognised included Sands End Boxing Club, Chelsea & Westminster Swimming Club, Hammersmith Basketball Club and Hammersmith & Fulham Rugby Club.

Hammersmith Harriers Netball Club, Phoenix Flyers Trampolining Club and Bishops Park Tennis were also commended for their services to the community.

All these clubs have been awarded either the local sports accreditation award called Club Excel or the national accreditation award Clubmark.

On the back of Jade Jones’ gold medal in taekwondo at London 2012, five future taekwondo stars who are all recipients of council funding also attended the event.

Youngsters Yassine Saidoune and Endris Tafilaku, representing St Katherine’s Taekwondo club and competing at both national and international level, attended the event.

Other attendees representing the GB youth squad were Grace Smith, of Jaguar Taekwondo, and Kickstar Taekwondo’s Shayanne Sarsoza.

These athletes are already part of GB youth squads and could be future Olympic champions themselves.

The Mayor, Councillor Belinda Donovan, said: “It was wonderful to rub shoulders with some of the borough’s young sports stars.

“Who knows, some of these youngsters may even go on to future Olympic success.”
