Wandsworth book launch and empowerment event to be held

A book launch and empowerment event, creating awareness around abusive relationships, is taking place this Tuesday in Wandsworth.

Behind Closed Doors, a book curated for women in Wandsworth to tell their experiences surviving domestic abuse, is being launched at an empowerment event at Balham Library this Tuesday from 12-3pm.

The book is being launched by Better Days Inspirational, a community interest company which provides domestic abuse awareness and prevention support.

Naomi Blake, director and founder of Better Days Inspirational and curator of Behind Closed Doors, said: “I realised there was a gap in awareness and prevention.

“There was a lot of support when you’re leaving domestic abuse, but there wasn’t the support when you’re not ready to leave or you’re not aware of the signs.”

Through hard work, Naomi put the book together herself with the aim to create awareness about domestic abuse and prevention.

Behind Closed Doors compiles the stories of a number of women in Wandsworth who have survived domestic abuse and wish to tell their story.

Naomi said: “They could share their stories in their own words and in their own way, and how much they would like to share as well, because it is their stories.

“It‘s all about where they are now and how they are feeling now.”

The event on Tuesday will host networking and refreshments.

Three guest speakers will be sharing their experiences of domestic abuse at the event and there will be an opening speech for the book from the mayor.

A few other organisations will also have stalls at the event, providing leaflets and information throughout.

Due to funding the book will not be on sale, but if anyone not attending the event is interested and would like a copy they should reach out by email to [email protected].

Tickets to the event are currently on eventbrite, or email Better Days Inspirational via the email above.

Naomi said: “I’m doing this event and even if it helps one person, that’s the aim.”
