Santander Cycles new rental system – what London cyclists need to know

Santander Cycles is launching a new rental system with Transport for London (TfL), introducing a new app and a QR code to unlock the bikes.

The new system will launch on 17 November with the aim of making bike hires quicker for users across London.

Currently, casual Santander bike users need to purchase a ride through one of the touchscreen terminals and receive a printed ticket with a code to unlock a bike.

David Eddington, head of cycle hire at TfL, said: “These upgrades will transform the customer experience, from being able to unlock a bike in seconds using a QR code, to faster payment options and better access to fully charged e-bikes.”

Customers will be able to pay for their rides using digital payment options, including Apple Pay and Google Pay.

However, the transition to the new system means Santander Cycles will temporarily stop operating between 13 and 17 November while the upgrade takes place, and users won’t be able to rent bikes during those days.

TfL has confirmed customers will receive compensation for the disruption, with a free ride for everyone downloading the new app.

Annual members will receive a seven-day extension to their subscription, while monthly pass holders will get an additional five days.

The update comes as demand for Santander Cycles continues to grow.

The scheme recorded more than seven million hires in 2026 so far, while TfL data shows that cycling trips have risen by 43% since 2019.

Will Norman, London’s walking and cycling commissioner, said: “London is a cycling city, with more than 1.5million bike trips a day last year, the highest number on record, and this shows no sign of slowing down.”

He added improving the Santander Cycles experience would help encourage more people to choose cycling for their everyday journeys.
