Chris Kaba: Met officer charged with murder

A Met Police officer has been charged with murder in relation to the death of Chris Kaba.

Kaba was shot during a police operation in Streatham Hill on 5 September 2022.

The officer, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will attend Westminster Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.

The charge was brought by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) following a referral from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The Met’s Deputy Assistant Commissioner Helen Millichap said: “Today’s announcement is a significant and serious development.

“We have fully supported the IOPC investigation as it has worked to establish the facts.

“We must allow the court process to run its course so it would not be appropriate for me to say more at this stage.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this case.”

The officer, suspended since 12 September 2022, will remain off-duty and the Met has said that internal misconduct matters will be considered at the conclusion of the criminal proceedings.
