Free heart screenings available at Brentford FC in March

Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) is hosting a weekend of free heart screenings in collaboration with Brentford FC at its Community Stadium Hub on 9-10 March.

Brentford fans, and people in the community aged 14-35, are invited to book a space online using the password ROBERT2024.

The screenings are part of Brentford FC’s Heart of West London campaign to celebrate the legacy of technical director Robert Rowan, who tragically died at the age of 28 in November 2018 after suffering a fatal cardiomyopathy episode.

Robert’s wife Suzanne Rowan, who assisted CRY in organising the event, said: “The fact the club can provide regular options for people to come along and get screened in their community is just brilliant.

“It takes a maximum of half an hour out of your day just to get that reassurance, and if there is something to follow up on, a lot of it is very manageable and CRY can help support with that.

“I’m aware of a few individuals who have had referrals and I’ve had really good feedback that they’re grateful to know the problem is there and they can manage it.”

Rowan confirmed CRY have screened about 400 people in West London since annual events began in May 2019.

Screening with an electrocardiogram (ECG) aims to identify conditions such as heart muscle disorders or electrical faults of the heart.

Every week in the UK, 12 apparently fit and healthy people aged 35 and under die from a previously undiagnosed heart condition according to CRY.

Peter Lewis, CRY Screening Event Manager, said: “By using days like this in community venues like this which are set up for us, we can actually bring people in, can actually do these tests, and we can actually find people before something happens.”

The Community Stadium Hub at Brentford FC Community Sports Trust opened as a venue for hire to the public in September 2022, with rooms ranging in capacity from 30 to 100 people.
