Dons Local Action Group ‘sleeping out’ again hoping to beat last year’s impressive fundraising efforts

Dons Local Action Group (DLAG) is hoping to improve on the impressive £44,000 they raised at last year’s ‘Big Sleep Out’.

Sixty participants slept out last year aiming to raise £20,000 for various charities and this year the group are hoping to get more than 150 people taking part.

A spokesperson for DLAG commented that they are really excited at the potential this year’s event holds.

Although the event says over-18s only, this doesn’t mean that you cannot help the cause if you are under that age.

A local Guides group are doing their own ‘sleep in’ to allow them to take part with DLAG’s advice for younger fans at home being to sleep out in their living room so they can still raise money.

The ‘Big Sleep Out 2’ will take place on Saturday 3 December and fans will sleep inside the Cherry Red Records Stadium only hours after AFC Wimbledon take on Grimsby Town at the same venue.

Former players such as Ollie Palmer, Benjamin Heneghan and Darius Charles took part in the sleep out last year.

League Two Play-Off Final winner Charles said: “When I heard about ‘The Big Sleep Out’ and the cause it was for, I was really excited to join and be a part of it, but I never knew how hard it would be.

“That night was cold, uncomfortable and I barely got any sleep, it not only made me grateful for the roof I have over my head but passionate about helping those who are homeless.

“I would definitely tell people to join and I myself would love to do it again.”

AFC Wimbledon fan Marc Jones, who also took part in last year’s event, explained: “It was freezing cold and uncomfortable but that was kind of the point.

“There was a great sense of coming together to help people who have little choice but to sleep like that all winter.

“I was proud to help DLAG and their partners bring some comfort to those who really need our help.”
