Demonstration by Merton residents campaigns against Wimbledon Tennis expansion

A demonstration organised by residents in the borough of Merton took place on October 26 to protest against Merton Council’s approval of the Wimbledon Tennis expansion.

The expansion consists of a re-development of the 23-acre land in Wimbledon Park, and large-scale construction including 39 new courts and a new 8,000 seat stadium for the tennis championships.

Merton Council’s planning committee granted permission for the All England Lawn Tennis Club’s application on the former site of Wimbledon Park Golf Club.

However, residents from Merton made their feelings clear by organising a demonstration outside Merton Council’s building.

Many campaigners in Merton are ardently opposed to the expansion, and are determined to prevent the plans going ahead.
