Mysterious Twickenham post box topper offers support for domestic abuse survivors

An anonymous knitter has crafted a new post box topper in Twickenham to support people experiencing domestic abuse.

The pink woollen creation, which is yet to be claimed by its artist, appeared on top of a post box at the corner of Fourth Cross Road over the past few days, according to locals.

Stitched beneath two blue butterflies is the phone number for the National Domestic Abuse Helpline – a 24-hour freephone service run by the charity Refuge.

Refuge supports victim-survivors of domestic abuse by operating a phone line, providing legal services, arranging emergency temporary accommodation for those fleeing abusive relationships, and more.

This topper in Twickenham has appeared just ahead of the UK’s Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, which takes place in October every year.

According to the Office for National Statistics, around 3.8million over-16s in the UK experienced abuse at home in the survey year ending March 2025.

Post box toppers have become a popular way of raising awareness for issues like this since the trend took off during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Across the UK, they have also been used to commemorate and celebrate a variety of events, from Remembrance Day to England’s victories in the UEFA Women’s Euros.

Individuals who are affected by the issues in this story can call the National Domestic Abuse Helpline at 0808 2000 247. All calls are free and confidential.
