Merton’s new mayor was officially elected last night during the borough’s annual council meeting.

Councillor Krystal Miller, Merton’s 49th Mayor, takes on the role after being a councillor on Trinity Ward for seven years.

“I am extremely proud to have been elected as the Mayor of Merton and excited about the year ahead,” she said.

I will place a strong emphasis on volunteering and improving the lives of young people during my time as Mayor.”

Councillor Miller’s appointed charities are Home Start Merton and the Polka Theatre on Wimbledon’s The Broadway.

After graduating from Southampton in 2001, Councillor Miller moved to Wimbledon where she now lives in South Park Road in Trinity Ward.

She takes over the role from Councillor David Williams, who was recognised at the meeting for raising over £55,000 for charity during his year in office, including buying Wimbledon Guild new transport for their activities.

He was also thanked for reviving the Merton Civic Awards.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time as Mayor and was honoured to represent Merton throughout a very exciting year for the borough,” said Councillor Williams

“I am particularly proud to have raised a large sum of money for charity.

“I wish her a Mayoralty as enjoyable and successful as mine, and know she will have a rewarding year in our borough.”
