Bus users in Merton will have a better service after the announcement of the extension of route 463.

From Saturday December 19 the 463 will go to Pollards Hill and Coulsdon South station Transport for London announced yesterday.

The 463 currently runs between Coulsdon and Mitcham Eastfields but will be diverted to serve the shops and other facilities in Beddington.

TfL have worked with Merton Council to enable the changes which will include new bus stops.

John Berry, Head of Development at London Buses, said: “The changes were planned as part of our regular development of the network, following consultation with the Boroughs, London TravelWatch and others.”

The new route is hoped to reduce the number of people in the borough using their cars for commuting and other trips in and around Merton.

Councillor William Brierly said: “The extended bus route will also encourage more people to leave their cars at home and take advantage of a more environmentally friendly form of transport.

“This is great news for Merton and particularly for residents in Pollards Hill.”

Councillor Brierly believes the extension of the route will make it easier for bother commuters and leisure travellers to get to the new Mitcham Eastfields station.

A spokesperson for London TravelWatch, who were consulted on the extension, welcomed the changes and hope more bus extensions will occur in the future particularly in outer London to minimise the use of car use when driving to and from train stations.

The 463 runs every 20 minutes on weekdays and half hourly in the evenings and Sundays.
