Moves, grooves and fundraising in Brixton for street dance festival launch

Brixton hip hoppers are ready to don their dancing shoes as SW2 prepares for three days of bouncing in a street dance culture celebration this weekend.

International Street Dance Festival PHD Events has teamed up with Black Archives charity to bring this year’s edition to Brixton, hosting legendary street dance pioneers from the USA and Britain.

London’s hip hop community will be busting moves amid a wide selection of dance workshops, talks, art showcases, film screenings and freestyle jams, with artists such as Popin Pete (Electric Boogaloos), Mr Wiggles (Rock Steady Crew) and Brooklyn Terry (Elite Force Crew).

Tania Diggory, Founder of PHD Events said: “This festival has evolved so much over the past year and we have an incredible line-up in store for November.

“All the artists involved have a phenomenal reputation in their field of dance and we also work with some of the most inspirational MCs, DJs and graffiti artists in the UK to showcase the overall artistic expressions that emerged from hip hop culture.”

The festival will kick off this evening with a preview of the ground-breaking hip-hop documentary A Way Of Life: A Journey Through The World of Global Hip-Hop at the Ritzy, followed by a Q&A session, a photography exhibition and a welcome party.

Weekend events will be held at the BCA & Lambeth Hall and street dancers can groove among workshops, talks and presentations from Saturday morning all the way through to Sunday night.

While celebrating hip hop culture, PHD will also be fundraising to support Black Archives, an organisation celebrating the heritage of Black people in Britain, and Danceaid, who provide care for orphaned children in the UK, Asia and Africa.
