Chefs and foodies rejoice! Thousands expected as Streatham food festival set to cook up a storm

Thousands of budding chefs and excited foodies are expected to visit Streatham’s seventh annual food festival starting tomorrow.

It is predicted more than 12,000 people will grace the streets during the five-day event which will see Streatham’s cuisines brought to life through pop-up restaurants, food tours, recipe competitions and a film screening.

One of Streatham’s newer eateries, Hood, will be starting the proceedings with a specially-designed beer and food pairing evening.

Other events across the week include cocktail making classes at El Chicos, a food tour where Streatham restaurants will be serving taster versions of their popular dishes, and a Vegan experience run by Vegan Sweet Tooth — the first and only vegan patisserie in London.

Liz Barett, festival manager, said: “The festival gives businesses the chance to be part of the community, it gets people to the area, and gives us the opportunity to let people know what Streatham is all about.”

The festival’s grand finale is a daylong extravaganza on Sunday 19 at Streatham Green, complete with food, music and entertainment.

More than 20 pop-up stalls will be selling a variety of food from jerk chicken and BBQ fish to artisan crepes and boozy ice creams.

Entertaining festival goers will be community choir, Sing Out Streatham, and live street art by graffiti group, id-iom.

Liz said: “The festival has become an annual event that people look forward to and are will to travel to, I have even had a couple from Canada who came last year emailing me to confirm the dates for this year!”

Lambeth council will be on site talking about their food flagship programme, which promotes food growing initiatives and environmental education in the borough, they will also announce the winner of their schools recipe competition.

The festival is funded by InStreatham, a group of businesses who work together to improve the look, feel and safety of the area.
