Rough night for Lib Dems as parliamentary candidate beds down on Wimbledon street for charity

A night sleeping in Wimbledon town centre might not be a usual stop on the campaign trail, but Wimbledon Lib Dem candidate Shas Sheehan did just that last Friday.

Mrs Sheehan took part in the Sleep Easy event organised by the YMCA to highlight homelessness and raise money for local charities supporting homeless people.

The Lib Dem candidate joined volunteers who took part in the event and raised nearly £600.

She said: “There are all sorts of reasons why someone becomes homeless, and our local charities work tirelessly to help them through difficult times.

“They also invest a great deal of thought and energy to helping them get their lives back on track.

“As a volunteer with the Wimbledon Faith in Action Homeless Project, I know the highly motivated team in Wimbledon well – and admire their commitment, energy and drive.”

While Mrs Sheehan admitted it wasn’t the best way to spend a Friday night, she acknowledged it gave her a good insight into what it is like to be homeless.

“It may not be the most fun way to spend a Friday night on the town, but I certainly got a small taste of what it’s like to be down and out,” she said.

“It was apparently only down to 6 degrees on Friday night, but that was more than cold enough.”
