Appeal to find unsuspecting cabbie who gave ride to alleged Merton rapist and teenage victim

A black cab driver is being sought by Merton police as a key witness in the investigation into the rape of a teenager last month.

The driver, who is not a suspect, picked up a man near the Mitcham Road McDonalds in Tooting at about 2.30am on Sunday November 22.

After pulling away the man leaned out of the window to offer a lift to the victim as the taxi stopped at traffic lights by Tooting Broadway Underground Station.

The pair got out of the cab on a road near Morden Underground Station and detectives would like to identify the driver, described as a black man, about the fare.

On the night in question the 19-year-old victim, who is white and has medium length dark hair, was wearing a black jacket, a short skirt or dress and black boots.

The suspect is aged in his 20s, white with a bald or shaven head, he was wearing a brown jacket.

A 28-year-old Merton man is on bail after being arrested in connection with the investigation.

Detectives from the Sexual Offences Exploitation and Child Abuse Command are investigating.

The driver, or anyone with any information, that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Detective Constable Ashley Lees who is leading the investigation on 020 8721 4106.
