Child dies in Wimbledon after car crashes into primary school

UPDATE – 2.20pm

Met Police now confirm that sadly a child has died following an incident where a car collided with a building at a school in Wimbledon.

Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland, local police commander for south west London, said: “This is tragic news and our thoughts are with the girl’s family and friends, and everyone affected today.

“We remain at the scene and are continuing our investigation into the full circumstances of the incident.”

Met Police also confirmed that the driver of the vehicle, a woman aged in her 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police were called at 09:54hrs on Thursday, 6 July to reports that a car had collided with a building at The Study Prep, a school in Camp Road, Wimbledon.

Officers attended, along with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance.

There have been further injuries and we await an update from the London Ambulance Service.

The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene.

The Met are not treating this incident as terror related.

A major incident has been declared after a Land Rover crashed into The Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon, resulting in several casualties.

At least nine people, including seven children, are reported to have been injured in the incident. Met Police are not treating the incident as terror-related.

Police were made aware of the incident at 9:54 this morning, and Merton Police said ‘several casualties are being treated at the scene’.

Police added that an investigation is ongoing ‘to understand the full circumstances of what has taken place’.

The London Fire Brigade said they are ‘supporting emergency services at an ongoing incident’ on Camp Road, and two fire engines and two fire rescue units are at the scene.

The London Ambulance service are also in attendance, with an air ambulance and around 20 ambulances present at the scene.

The school in question is a school for girls aged 4-11. In Wimbledon Common, it is just a mile away from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, the host for the Wimbledon Tennis Championships.

Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond has expressed his concern, saying his ‘thoughts and prayers go out to everyone at The Study’.
