Hounslow Council has announced a new arts award which invites artists to submit their work for an exhibition at Hogarth’s House.
The winner of the main category of The Hogarth Prize will be awarded a six-week solo show at Hogarth’s House in 2027 and a £3,000 cash prize
The prize is open to any artists: amateur, emerging, and established. There is no set theme and a range of artistic mediums are welcomed, as long as the work can be presented in a wall-hanging format.
Anna Booth is a member of Artists At Home, a group of artists and studios in Chiswick, Hammersmith, and Shepherd’s Bush. The group open their houses and studios to the public to view their works a number of times a year.
Booth was supportive of the prize, and said: “We have a big vibrant community that is very supportive …we all think it [the prize] is a fabulous idea.
“William Hogarth would have liked us, he was a bit rebellious, he sold directly to the public, which is what we do with Artists At Home, I think he would have approved of what we do.”
Booth also supported the open call nature of the prize as she thought that it helped to make the arts more accessible.
The prize is the first of its kind to be launched by a London council and has been made in collaboration with Parker Harris, a visual arts consultancy.
Hogarth’s House is managed by Hounslow Council, and is the former home of William Hogarth. The house now holds the largest display of the artist’s work in the UK.
Hogarth was an 18th century artist from London, and was laid to rest in Chiswick. He is known for his satirist paintings and engravings.
Around 80 works will be shortlisted by the selection panel, which will be composed of artists, Robyn Graham, Hero Johnson RP, and Steven King.
The shortlisted works will be exhibited at Hogarth’s House from 28 July to 6 September.
Finalists will also be entered into a Visitor’s Choice Award with £500 available to win.
