No colours please: Staff forced to dress in black at Merton Council elections count

Council officials at the local election count in Merton had to rush home and change into neutral colours – in case they accidentally showed a party allegiance.

Staff told us they had to run home after their day shifts to get changed out of their usual colourful outfits to instead sport all-black ensembles.

And that neutrality spread further afield than just clothing, with the table cloths, fruit bowls, folders, stationary and pretty much anything in sight being made to be politically void.

Merton is currently held by Labour, who had a 16-seat lead over the Conservatives in 2014.
