When the nave of St Mary’s Church in Twickenham collapsed in 1713, the bell tower was the only thing that survived.
It now remains the oldest standing structure in Twickenham, dating back to the 15th century and continues to serve as a mark of culture and community, sending the iconic sound of church bells throughout the riverside town.
Within the four walls of the St Mary’s Church bell tower, a close-knit group of dedicated volunteers meet on Wednesday every week and work to keep the custom going.
The South West Londoner attended one of their practices, led by the tower captain, Liz Sephton, to speak to some bell ringers and better understand the importance of the art form.
