MPs, fathers and sportspeople came together for a kickabout calling for urgent reform to the UK’s paternity leave system – currently the worst in Europe.
Celebrity dads Ugo Monye and Troy Deeney were part of the star-studded squads campaigning the government to provide extra help for new fathers.
Movember and The Dad Shift are the two charities calling for fathers to receive 6 weeks’ statutory paternity leave at 90% pay immediately, with a phased expansion to 12 weeks within three years.
Troy Deeney, former Premier League footballer and pundit, said: “My youngest son was born in December 2019, I had to be back at work within 48 hours which was really hard, but I accepted it as part of my career as a footballer.
“I have recently had another baby and had much longer off which has made such a difference in terms of being able to support my partner and bond with my child. I wholeheartedly support this push for improved paternity leave in the UK.”
