New London restaurant openings highlighted by Great British Menu winner

Already loaded with fine eateries and hidden gems, you might be surprised just how many new restaurants open their doors each month in London.

Over 20 were scheduled to host a grand opening in May 2026 alone. Towards the back end of the month, while there are several top picks, MAAI looks to be the headliner.

All of the new restaurants will open with a different degree of hype and pageantry.

Just like when businesses in other sectors open up in London, some of these eateries may want to lean into a promotional angle for opening night.

With so many options out there, it’s a proven strategy that’s worked well in the past.

Whenever a business wants to announce itself to a new customer base, it’s rarely a bad idea to run out some kind of promotion.

Freebies and extras are often a good way to go, especially as we’re getting more accustomed to seeing these kinds of offers online.

For example, when you explore bingo bonuses at Paddy Power, there’s an offer for newcomers and some to give returning customers a boost.

On signing up and after playing £10, new players get 40 free spins on a curated selection of slots.

After that, there’s the daily cash prize promo and the free bingo hours.

It all helps to generate interest from the get-go and create a strong name for the brand as one where all are welcome.

To help push their concept with a soft launch event, the new opening for Teddington Pantry came with 100 free goody bags.

Given to the first customers through the door, each contained a boutique item selection.

May is filled with interesting restaurant openings to explore.

However, over in Clapham on 33-35 Abbeville Road, a champion chef will soon be opening her own restaurant.

Chef Nikita Pathakji won Great British Menu’s Champion of Champions event, spurring her on to bring her unique take on modern British dining to south west London.

Opening in May 2026, the menu will be a celebration of everything British, with classic dishes infused with the influences of the many diasporas of London.

The winner of MasterChef: The Professionals back in 2022 is bringing in her mother and sister to realise the full potential of MAAI.

Around the grand opening of MAAI in Clapham, we’ll see a new Cypriot tavern launch in Covent Garden by the name of Zylia from the head chef of Singuri, and a replacement to Franklin’s in East Dulwich, The Victory.

If you love your seafood, you’d also want to venture to Chelsea to see the opening of the larger The Sea, The Sea, too.

As noted, there are so, so many new restaurants opening across London, some of which are very local to those in the South West of the city.

In May and beyond, MAAI is the centrepiece opening in this neck of the capital.

It’s primed to offer a proven, and yet novel, menu that’ll delight people across the city, hopefully for years to come.
