Iconic images of David Bowie and Queen to be shown at the Barbican Music Library

Are you into Rock and Roll? Get ready to lose yourself by stepping into the world of your favourite music icons through a selection of the most compelling images of the past 70 years.

The Barbican Music Library has opened its doors to a new exhibition to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Rockarchive.com.

Titled In The Moment: The Art of Music Photography, the exhibition will shine a light on some of the most renewed pictures in rock history by recounting the stories behind the photographs in the photographers’ own words.

Munsur Ali, chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Culture, Heritage and Libraries Committee, said: “We should never underestimate the ability of a photograph to stir our emotions, to amuse and to jog our memories and take us back to a particular moment in time in our lives.”

The exhibition will showcase an amazing selection of much-loved artists in action from our era.

These iconic figures include the likes of David Bowie, Lady Gaga, Queen, Noel Gallagher and Amy Winehouse.

Two of the most iconic images to be displayed are Pete Townshend’s guitar flying through the air at Madison Square Garden and when Liam and Noel Gallagher were photographed during the making of the Wonderwall video.

David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane album cover shoot in 1973 is also among some of the most historical images displayed.

What distinguishes this exhibition from merely just a collection of photographs to view are that most of the photographs displayed are candid shots – giving viewers a real-life glimpse to some of their most favourite artists not in action.

Jill Furmanovsky, the founder of Rockarchive, said: “Since 1998, Rockarchive has been championing rock photography and photographers in the UK.

“We celebrate not just this important anniversary but also the talents of those behind and in front of the lens.

“We are delighted to return to Barbican Music Library to share some of those shots with everyone.”

Among some of the most recent images displayed is a recent portrait of the Arctic Monkeys by Kevin Westenberg.

The exhibition runs until 25 September at Barbican Music Library.
