WATCH: Folk revival across London as May Day celebrated in Whitechapel

Over the past few years there has been somewhat of a folk revival taking place across London.

Google searches for ‘folk London’ are at a five year high and more and more folk-themed event posters on Instagram and across the city have been advertised.

Musician and model Florence Rose turned to make folk music in recent years and started organising folk events called Turning of the Seasons in 2025.

At her May Day event at the George Tavern in Whitechapel she said she had noticed an increase in folk recently, perhaps as people were hoping to connect to each other and nature.

Mike Hankin and Rita Conry founded Off Beat Folk Film Club in 2022 and launched the first ever film festival specifically dedicate to folk culture in Britain in 2025.

Hankin also founded Folk Union, an independent press that explores folk culture and the emerging folk scene.

At the screening of a collection of films titled Underground London at Walthamstow Trades Hall, Hankin said he thought ‘young progressive people’ were turning to folk in search of identity and a deeper connection to their country.
