Wandsworth workshop teaches residents to up-sparkle jumpers this Christmas

Wandsworth residents are being shown the skills to upcycle their jumpers for Christmas in free sewing workshops.

Love Your Clothes, a consumer campaign aiming to reduce the waste of clothing across the UK, is hosting a workshop at Wandsworth Town hall on November 8, aiming to inspire guests to customise their own Christmas jumpers instead of buying new ones each year.

The UK spends more than £300m on Christmas jumpers each year, with just two fifths of people planning to wear them only once or twice.

Ali Moore, from Love Your Clothes London, said: “An estimated £30bn worth of UK clothing gathers dust in our wardrobes every year because we don’t wear it.

“Rather than buying new Christmas jumpers and party outfits which may only be worn once and then thrown away, we’re encouraging Londoners to upcycle last year’s Christmas jumpers.

“By coming along to these fun workshops, they could come away with not only a truly unique item of clothing, but also feeling inspired to support more sustainable fashion.”

The workshops will show residents how to make simple repairs and alterations, as new data shows less than one in five people feel confident enough to redesign their own clothes, and only 15% feel they could replace a pocket.

The Wandsworth workshop will take place at Wandsworth Town Hall between 6pm and 9pm on 8th November.
