WATCH: Promoters diversify dance events

Event line ups and the dance music scene have historically been a male-dominated field, and promoters’ artist selection can often lack diverse gender representation.

Less than 1% of the dance music played on UK Radio is made by a female solo artist or all female band, said BBC Radio 1

To combat this, London based promoters and DJs are pushing female, non-binary and LBGTQ artists to the forefront of their lineups and ensuring safety is a core value of every event.

Chloe, co-founder of Jungyals and Gays (JGNG), said: “The essence of JGNG is trying to create a sense of community within the dance music scene and create a platform for female and queer artists to shine.”

Daisy JD, a Birmingham and London-based self-taught DJ, shared experiences of moments she feels have been determined by her gender.

Daisy JD said: “Lineups just aren’t diverse enough. Let women play.”

JGNG is only just one example of how female promoters are pushing to create safety and greater lineup diversity, holding these at the forefront of their ethos.
