Norman Jay’s Good Times Sound System returns to Ally Pally

Legendary DJ Norman Jay MBE, will park the Good Times Sound System bus at Alexandra Palace on 27 August.

Nine years since the Good Times Sound System last appeared at its infamous Notting Hill Carnival spot, the beloved London bus returns with music, food, and vibes to the ‘Palace of the People’.

Jay said: “On August 27, from Notting Hill to Alexandra Palace, the capital is set to be alive with the sound of summertime.

“The People’s Palace is an iconic new home for the Sound System Bus, and I hope to bring Londoners young and old along for the ride.

“I can’t wait to see you all on the dancefloor.”

One of the world’s most respected DJs, the 65-year-old has been entertaining crowds since the 80s.

Co-founding KISS FM as a pirate radio station, the Notting Hill local pioneered the ‘rare groove’ music scene and became a Carnival icon.

‘Rare Groove’ is principled around playing tracks that are hard to source or uniquely obscure, often but not exclusively belonging to the funk, R&B, and jazz funk genres.

Playing his first set aged eight, Jay went on to become a hero in the warehouse music scene of the 80s and made his debut Notting Hill Carnival appearance with the Good Times bus in 1980 – a set that was played annually until 2014.

In 2002, the cult hero was awarded an MBE for his services to DJing and with his release of ‘Mister Good Times’ in 2017, he continues to champion new sounds without forgetting his musical roots.

The event on 27 August is guaranteed to get Londoners of all ages dancing along to a musical journey through house, rare groove, jazz, disco, hip-hop, and drum and bass from 2:00pm-7:30pm.

Such a historic act requires a landmark venue, and Alexandra Palace does not disappoint.

Opened in 1873 as the ‘Palace of the People’, the site continues to host an eclectic range of arts to help support creative learning within the community and fund the restoration of the listed Palace and award-winning parklands.

A range of delicious cocktails and street food to fuel an evening of dancing will be available on The Terrace overlooking London’s skyline.

From stone-fired pizza to Greece Lightning’s Mediterranean menu, there will be something for everyone and plenty of Oh Sante Cocktails to wash it down.
