PARENTS can find out about child safety services in Merton at a workshop in Lavender Steers Children’s Centre, Mitcham on Thursday, September 24.

The Merton Local Safeguarding Children Board (MLSCB) is hosting the event which aims to promote awareness of family support services.

The MLSCB is working with other agencies in the area including the Metropolitan Police, Merton Council, schools and youth services.

Between 10am and 12pm, children’s agencies and those who work with children are invited to a workshop to discuss the services on offer for vulnerable youths in Merton.

Parents with children up to the age of five are invited to the afternoon activity session between 1pm and 3pm.

They will have the opportunity to ask the participating agencies about what they are doing to keep Merton’s children safe.

Councillor Debbie Shears, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “The event is our way of making sure people are up to date with the children’s safeguarding agenda.”

The safety of Merton’s children has become an important issue for the council after the Annual Residents’ Survey in 2008 showed children make up 7% of the victims of crime.

Councillor Sheers said: “Child safety is an absolute priority for the council. The Local Safeguarding Children Board brings together the services and expertise of all professionals in Merton who are committed to putting the safety and needs of our children first.”
