Marco van Ginkel is optimistic of Chelsea catching Arsenal at the summit of the Premier League, praising his side’s recent performances.

The 21-year-old has been sidelined since September with an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered against Swindon Town.

The Gunners are four points clear at the top of the table with the Blues below them in second place.

“We play well, score a lot of goals and are second in the table, Arsenal are four points in front of us but I think we do a good job,” he said.

“I think we have a lot of very good players. Against Sunderland Eden Hazard was great, he scored two very nice goals and a great assist.

“Lampard is also really important, but that is for the last 15 years. It is not just these two players it is the whole team and the manager.”

Chelsea’s number 16 had made an instant impact at the start of the season, making four competitive appearances for the Blues.

Van Ginkel moved for £8million this summer after 93 league appearances and 18 goals for Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem.

“I had some confidence, I was playing minutes, it was getting better but then I had my injury and now my focus is on that,” he said.

Van Ginkel was named Dutch football talent of the year in 2013, which recognises talented young players in the country.

He has two caps to his name already for the Netherlands senior team, making his debut against Germany in November last year. He will certainly be hoping to have an impact on the football scores for Chelsea in the near future.

The Dutchman, speaking at Delta Air Lines Presents A Night Under the Bridge, said he expects to return from injury in March or April.

“It is a tough injury but I work hard every day. I come in very early and I am the latest one at the club,” he said.

“Every day I have a lot of treatment in the swimming pool, in the gym and sometimes on the field.”

Chelsea travel to Stoke City on Saturday.
