London ranks first in Europe for combined nightlife and public transport

London has been ranked first among European capitals for its combined strength of nightlife and public transport in a new report.

The joint research, London After Dark, by Time Out and TfL found that late-running public transport has been attributed as a major contributing factor with 88% of Londoners citing it as a reason for staying out later.

This commemorates the ten-year anniversary of the Night Tube service being launched by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, with 50,000 journeys made on its first night.

The report also follows London topping Time Out’s ranking of global cities for culture earlier this year.

TfL’s operating officer, Claire Mann, said: “London at night has changed significantly over the past decade, and the Night Tube has evolved alongside it.

“Ten years on, we’re proud of the role the Night Tube plays in supporting London’s businesses, workers, visitors and world-leading cultural scene.”

London After Dark focuses on how the capital’s nightlife has changed in the past decade with around 200 Londoners contributing to the weeklong study.

The study involved surveys, diary entries, creative tasks and personal stories and draws on 5,848 responses across 26 European capitals, giving equal weight to nightlife and public transport.

A main finding of the study was that London’s nighttime economy had significantly broadened over the past decade with 55% of Londoners believing great nights out are spread across the capital and not just centrally.

Sadiq Khan said: “I’m incredibly proud that London is home to this world-leading service, and I look forward to seeing the Night Tube continue to drive economic growth and unlock new opportunities as we build a better London for everyone.

“This report really brings to life how The Night Tube connects Londoners and visitors with our city’s incredible cultural offering, helping people discover new venues and events in new parts of the capital while ensuring they can travel home safely and affordably at any hour.”

This coincides with a diversifying nighttime scene with the globally acclaimed Blue Note Jazz Club in Covent Garden as well as the Oxford Street transformation allowing greater access to the West End.

This is supported by multiple Night Tube lines serving Bond Street, Marble Arch, and Oxford Circus.

The study points out the importance of public transport relating to nightlife with 77% of Londoners saying how they get home is an important factor in deciding where to go.

Since its launch, Night Tube and Night Overground have carried more than 67 million customers with an average night now supporting 81,000 journeys on the Night Tube.

TfL continues to invest in improving public transport at the weekends with both more services and later ones added in recent years.

An additional late-night Elizabeth line service from Abbey Wood through to Maidenhead on Saturdays has been added as well as increased Saturday services to central London from 16 to 20 trains per hour between 11am and 8pm since December 2025.

New nightlife announcements in autumn included Apple Music Hall, 7,000 capacity warehouse music venue Ironworks and Heaven being given protected status to prevent redevelopment.
