Wimbledon fans say ‘you just have to accept that’ when talking about the tennis tournament’s rising prices.
The price of strawberries and cream increased from £2.70 last year to £ 2.85 this year. That portion came with seven-10 strawberries and a 30 minute queue.
A glass of Pimms with a reusable cup cost £13.45, up from £12.25 and a pint of Stella Artois was £8.85.
A fish finger sandwich costs £14.50, a gin and tonic £10.75, and a bottle of Lanson champagne ranges from £98 to £110.20.
Wimbledon attendees said they had arrived expecting an expensive day out. Benjamin, 41, bought centre court tickets won in the ballot and described the day as “not cheap, but it’s not ridiculous”, although he admitted to buying nothing but a picnic box.
He said: “The queues are too long. That’s the problem, it’s the queues”
Ground pass holders Aidan, 26, and Ben, 23, spoke specifically about the price of drinks. Aidan said: “I thought it was expensive last time so I didn’t expect it to be cheap; I knew it was going to be an expensive day out. You just have to accept that.”
Ben, 23, said: It’s not going to be Poundland”
For Nico, 22, the answer was to come prepared. “Overall it is not the best budget-friendly place in terms of eating, but you can bring in a bottle of wine and some food for yourself.”
He felt the day still delivered: “More than anything, a grounds pass is still made for a good day.”
