LISTEN: Education officials divided over perceived drop in language learning

Being multilingual is an increasingly desired and uncommon skill in the UK workforce.

But with the removal of EBacc in 2025, a performance measure that partly judged schools on language performance, there is concern that language learning will be neglected in future curriculums.

Vicky Gough, Schools Adviser at the British Council, highlighted the socio-economic impact on state schools, which could lead to disadvantaged students having their options reduced.

On the other hand, David Blow, a Fellow at the Association for Language Learning, stressed that London bucked the national trend, and that its most underprivileged boroughs were in fact above the UK average.
