Living with PMDD: The devastating menstrual health condition you’ve probably never heard of

Trigger warning: This article discusses highly distressing topics, including suicidal ideation, and self harm.

Two women have bravely shone a light on a condition very few people in the UK have heard of: Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).

The condition impacts one in 20 people who menstruate, and debilitating symptoms can last for up to three weeks every month.

One PMDD sufferer said: “It feels like hanging off the edge of a cliff by your fingertips, desperately clinging to your own sanity.”

Others likened it to drowning or “being lost at sea during a terrible storm – unable to find a safe harbour”.
