Inside The Young Barbican's Takeover Festival

WATCH: The Young Barbican Takeover Festival 2026 highlighted the need for more creative spaces

At the end of March, London’s performing arts centre The Barbican opened its doors to young people for a day of creativity at The Young Barbican Takeover Festival.

Workshops like zine making and knitting took place alongside live music, poetry performances, film screenings and a roller disco.

All the while, there was also a makers market offering everything from zines to jewellery made by independent artists and creators.

Events like these are popping up more across London, which is perhaps a result of Gen Z’s demand for community spaces and creative opportunities.

The Barbican is seen as a creative hub for film-enthusiasts, classical music lovers, and arts students alike.

This summer, they have a programme filled with events for anyone searching for a creative space in London, so, beyond The Young Barbican Takeover Festival, hope for young creatives prevails.

At the festival, mid-knitting session, attendees – some of whom had travelled from Essex to be there – agreed on the importance of making creative spaces for young people.

After all, with the mass closures of youth clubs over the last few years, it is clear that young people need to be welcomed into spaces that allow them to make friends, try new things, and have fun.

Watch the video below for reflections on the festival’s impact.
